4th International Drone Show Competition
General Rules

1.1. The 4th International Drone Show Competition (“Competition”) is a contest owned and produced by the SPH Engineering (“SPH”) a company registered in the Republic of Latvia (European Union). The Competition annually celebrates outstanding product design, technology and engineering in new Drone Shows. These GENERAL Rules summarize the high-level requirements and rules of the Competition. The terms of the GENERAL Rules are binding. Void where forbidden or restricted by law.
1.2. Eligibility and Requirements: The competition is open to any drone shows that meets one of the competition categories. For the purposes of the Competition, an “Applicant” is defined as the company, person and/or representative submitting the online application. Drone show providers, tech teams, 3D animators, vendors, event and marketing agencies, light and integrated show organizers and private drone show fans can take part in the competition.
1.3. Application Dates: Applications are accepted from September 18th to October 30th, 2023, until 11:59 PM Eastern European Summer Time Zone (UTC+3), equivalent to 4:59 PM Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) in the United States (“Application Dates”). Applicants will be notified of their status by email from October 30th to November 5th 2023.
1.4. Drone shows submitted in previous years are not eligible for resubmission unless significant unique and innovative improvements have been made to the original drone show and a new version is submitted. SPH reserves the right to disqualify entries at its sole discretion where significant improvements have not been made to the Drone shows submitted the previous year.
1.5. Participants need to send an application and video (link to file-sharing services) in accordance with the requirements for the chosen nomination and then click “APPLY” on the website: www.sphengineering.com/drone-show-competition. When filling out the application form, participants are required to provide the following information: company name, country, email address, brief information about the company, including website / social networks, as well as general information about the project.
1.6. All video materials submitted as part of the application must meet the following requirements:
1.6.1.Video preview must be uploaded to file-sharing services. The preview link must be provided along with the download link, both links are provided in the application form.

1.6.7.Videos must not contain any performer logos or branding.
1.6.8.Videos must show the participants' work and creativity without direct reference to the performer's name.
1.6.9.These guidelines ensure that submitted videos focus on the participants' abilities and creative expression, and not promotions of specific performers or brands.
1.7. Participants can submit one application for each nomination, provided that Drone Show meets the requirements for each nomination, and is eligible to win first place in only one nomination. In case of an incorrect nomination, the Drone Show may be moved to a different category based on the recommendations of the jury without the consent of the Applicant. There are two criteria for all participants: the materials must comply with all the requirements and be submitted before the deadline along with the application.
1.8. The Organizers have the right, at their discretion, to provide special nominations to any participant in the competition. These nominations acknowledge outstanding innovation, creativity or other qualities.
1.9. Submitted materials in all nominations will be evaluated by the International jury.
1.10. All materials (except "Best Drone Show Animation," which has its own criteria) will be judged by the jury members using a scale of 1-10 based on the following criteria:
1.10.1. Technical requirements: compliance with technical specifications and demonstration of high-quality workmanship.
1.10.2. Artistic value: demonstration of creativity, originality, and innovation in design.
1.10.3. Visual impact: creating visually appealing and captivating effects.
1.10.4. Show goals: Relevance to the intended themes or goals.
1.10.5. Target audience: resonating with the identified audience.
1.10.6. Results of the activities: demonstration of achieved results or impressions.
1.10.7. For the "Best Drone Show Animation" category, specific criteria related to technical excellence, storytelling and synchronization will apply.
1.11. Records and supporting documents must be in English for verification purposes.
1.12. The applicant’s representative must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application and authorized to submit the Drone show on behalf of the Applicant.
1.13. The winner in each nomination will be chosen based on the number of points awarded.
1.14. Winners will be announced at https://sphengineering.com/drone-show-competition
1.15. Winning videos and participants will be presented by SPH Engineering and published on https://sphengineering.com/drone-show-competition and the company's social media channels, and may also be used in external media channels for PR/promotional purposes.
1.16. Participant Eligibility and Voting Restrictions:
1.16.1. SPH Engineering representatives cannot participate at the Competition.
1.16.2. International jury members have the right to submit their entries for consideration at the Competition. However, any participant who holds a concurrent role as a member of the jury does not have the right to vote for their own submitted work. This restriction is intended to ensure impartiality and fairness of the voting process. The competition organizers are committed to upholding the integrity of the event by preventing any potential conflicts of interest that may arise from dual roles. During the community voting phase and the jury evaluation phase, participants who hold a dual role will be required to refrain from voting for their own submission. Participants and/or international jury members who violate this regulation may be disqualified at the discretion of the Competition Organizers.
1.17. By taking part in the Competition, Participants agree to the following terms: 
1.17.1. Competition organizers will use the submitted materials, but not limited to: for demonstration flights of drones, publications on the organizers’ online resources, publications in international media and distribution.
1.17.2. Possibility of the organizers promoting the participants' names, work, and images at their discretion.
1.17.3. Collection and processing of personal data for the purpose of administering the competition and communication in accordance with the conditions specified in the Privacy Policy.
1.17.4. By participating, participants acknowledge and agree to these terms, granting the organizers permission to exhibit their work and achievements.
1.17.5. Participants agree to the use of top animations by the organizers for aviation purposes, subject to receipt of the necessary documentation confirming the approval of the creators and the use of copyright.

A panel of industry experts will review nominations based on a set of criteria listed below, and the Drone Show with the highest score will be declared the winner in each nomination:

This category recognizes a drone show that demonstrates exceptional creativity and visual storytelling through animation on a given theme:
3.1.1. Drone show providers, tech teams, animators, vendors, event agencies, light and integrated show organizers, as well as private drone show fans are invited to participate in the nomination.

3.1.2. Participants must be the original creators, own or hold the legal copyright for the drone show design/animation they submit for nomination.

3.1.3. The "Drone Show Animation" nomination will not participate in the Drone Show Community's voting stage (first stage). The jury will evaluate exclusively this category in the second stage.

3.1.4. The application package for the nomination “Best drone show animation" includes: video preview link of the 3D animation, 3D animation original file link, storyboard with sketches link, completed application form.

Works submitted in this category should align with the following themes. 

Fantastic creatures

This theme immerses audiences into magical and fantastical realms inspired by fairy tales, myths, and fantasy literature. Drones will breathe life into dragons, elves, enchanted castles, and more.

Vanishing wildlife

In this theme, participants create a drone show aimed at raising awareness about the critical issue of disappearing wildlife and the vital importance of biodiversity conservation. Drones can vividly depict endangered animal species, narrate their stories, and underscore the significance of protecting their habitats.

3.1.5. The animation should be created in Blender program and submitted as a .blend file (please download the template).

3.1.6. A video preview of the 3D animation running from start to finish should be recorded and uploaded to YouTube or Vimeo. The link with the preview should be provided together with the download animation original file link, both links are provided in and together with the application form.

The animation must contain at least 2 moving figures with minimum 2 transitions, consisting of 300 drones, created in accordance with the technical requirements prescribed in the Сompetition rules. More figures are allowed in the application file.

3.1.7. To submit an application, the participant must also prepare a storyboard with sketches of the entire future show. Link to the storyboard with sketches is also provided in and together with the application form.

3.1.8. The participant must also describe in the application form the concept of the entire drone show. Without a description of the drone show, the application will not be considered.

3.1.9. The winner of this nomination is eligible to participate in the Drone Show Festival organized by Flock drone Art in Spain or in any of its future editions.

3.1.10. All submitted animations, storyboards and drone show concepts will be evaluated by an international jury, which includes the organizers of the International Drone Show Festival.

3.1.11. There are two criteria for an animation to be eligible for winning: must be made in accordance with all requirements and be submitted before the deadline together with a video preview and storyboard.

3.1.12. The "Drone Show Animation" nomination will not participate in the Drone Show Community's voting stage (first stage). The jury will evaluate exclusively this category in the second stage.

3.1.13. Participants may submit unlimited number of application per nomination. Each participant has the right to receive an award in only one nomination. Misclassified applications may be transferred to a different nomination by organizers. Two criteria apply to all participants: meeting the requirements and submitting before the deadline.

3.1.14. All submitted materials will be owned by SPH Engineering and Flock Drone Art.

3.1.15. Participants should consent to publication of their animations and all materials using the animation, with reference to the participant.

3.1.16. Evaluation criteria for Partner Nomination: Drone Show Animation 300 drones. The winners will be selected by the jury evaluating all applications according to the following criteria:

Technical correctness of the animation (0-10):

  • Does the animation meet all the requirements
  • Takeoff and landing formations 300 drones
  • At least 2 figures with minimum 2 transitions
  • Does it pass velocity and collision tests?

Visual impact of the animation (0-10)

  • Does the animation leave a lasting impression on the viewer?
  • How dynamic is it?
  • How impressive is the use of color?

Artistic value (0-10)

  • Is the animation and drone show concept original?
  • What new ideas does it bring to the table?
  • Does it involve elements previously not seen in drone shows?

Meets the theme requirements (0-10)

  • Does the animation follow / fit the  stated themes?
  • Does the storyboard with sketches reflect the stated themes?
  • Does the concept of the entire drone show reflect the stated theme?

Competition participant experience

  • Does the participant have enough experience to participate in a major international project and prepare 3D animation for a full-fledged drone show?
  • Openness to communication: is the participant in touch with the organizers of the Competition during the competition?

Each participant will have two attempts to correct any errors highlighted by the jury.

3.1.18. TECHNICAL CRITERIA FOR CREATING 3D ANIMATIONS FOR THE APPLICATION

  • The animation should be created in Blender, program and submitted as a .blend file. (please use the template) together with a video preview of the animation as a YouTube, Vimeo link.
  • Each drone should be represented by a sphere with a radius of 0.3-0.4m. Spheres should be named in the following way: Sphere_0, Sphere_1 or similar, as long as they have the same prefix and numbering system.
  • The animation should contain 300 spheres in total, each representing a drone.
  • In the animation coordinate system, the Z axis should face upwards.
  • The animation should use 24 frames per second (FPS).
  • During the animation, drone speeds should not exceed 3m/s and distances should not be closer than 2.5m.
  • The animation should have the same starting and ending formation in which the drones should be placed in a rectangular 10x30 grid on the ground (Z=0) with a distance of 4m between them.
  • Drone positions at the start and end should be identical.
  • During the animation, the drones should not go below Z=0 and their altitude should not exceed 100 meters (Z=100).
  • The number of figures in the animation must be 2 or more.
  • Real drones will be equipped with LED modules. Animation should contain not only movement but also color changes. The color is set by changing the sphere material color.

This category recognizes the best drone show presented at the event. Nominees will be judged based on factors such as choreography, synchronization, use of technology, creativity, and audience engagement. The award is given for the performance that stands out as the most captivating and memorable at the event.

3.2.1. Drone show providers, event organizers, tech teams, and drone show enthusiasts are invited to participate in this category.
3.2.2. Participants may submit one application per nomination. Each participant has the right to receive an award (1st to 3rd place) in only one nomination. Misclassified applications may be transferred to a different nomination by organizers. Two criteria apply to all participants: meeting the requirements and submitting before the deadline.
3.2.3. To enter the competition, participants must submit a video showcasing their live drone show performance at an event. The video must be capturing the choreography, audience engagement, use of music, and overall entertainment value.
3.2.4. The performance must demonstrate accuracy, creativity, and the ability to captivate and entertain the audience during the event.
3.2.5. Participants can submit videos of drone shows that have already taken place in 2023.
3.2.6. The video must be recorded in high-quality and uploaded to file hosting service. A link to the video must be provided along with the submission.
3.2.7.A ll submitted drone show performances will be judged based on their ability to engage and entertain the audience, the synchronization of the drones, and the overall impact of the show.
3.2.8. The winner in this category will be recognized for an outstanding live performance, capturing the essence of an exciting drone show experience.

This category acknowledges a drone show that effectively tells a compelling narrative or conveys a story through its performance. Nominees will showcase a coherent and engaging storyline that is enhanced by the synchronized movements and visual elements of the drone show.

3.3.1. Drone show providers and creative teams are invited to participate in the nomination.
3.3.2. Participants may submit one application per nomination. Each participant has the right to receive an award (1st to 3rd place) in only one nomination. Misclassified applications may be transferred to a different nomination by organizers. Two criteria apply to all participants: meeting the requirements and submitting before the deadline.
3.3.3. To qualify for this category, participants must present a drone show performance that effectively conveys a compelling narrative or story through synchronized drone movements.
3.3.4. Participants will be judged based on their ability to engage the audience with a coherent storyline that unfolds in the drone show choreography.
3.3.5. The drone show should evoke emotions, capture the imagination of the audience, and demonstrate creativity in storytelling.
3.3.6. Videos of drone shows that have been flown at events or specially created for this competition are allowed to participate.
3.3.7. The video must  be recorded in high-quality and uploaded to a file hosting  service.
3.3.8. All entries will be judged based on their storytelling abilities, the emotional impact of the performance, and the synchronization of drone movements.
3.3.9. Participants must submit an application by the given date with a description of the narrative and the message conveyed through the drone show performance.
3.3.10. The winner of this category will be recognized for the exceptional storytelling skills and their ability to convey a meaningful narrative through the drone show.

This category highlights the drone show that successfully uses the medium as a marketing tool. Nominees will showcase performances that effectively promote a brand, product, or event by using the visual impact and technological capabilities of drones to create a memorable marketing experience. 

Rules:
3.4.1. This nomination recognizes drone shows that have effectively used the power of media as a marketing tool to promote brands, products, or events.
3.4.2. Participants may submit one application per nomination. Each participant has the right to receive an award (1st to 3rd place) in only one nomination. Misclassified applications may be transferred to a different nomination by organizers. Two criteria apply to all participants: meeting the requirements and submitting before the deadline.
3.4.3. Participants in this category will demonstrate drone show performances that will leave a lasting impression on the audience and deliver marketing messages effectively.
3.4.4. The drone shows should showcase the brand's identity, product features, or event highlights through choreography, visual effects and creative use of technology.
3.4.5. Nominees are encouraged to leverage the visual impact and technological capabilities of drones to create a memorable and immersive marketing experience.
3.4.6. Videos of drone shows used for marketing purposes, whether at trade shows, product launches, or brand campaigns, are eligible for submission.
3.4.7. Participants must submit a video recording of the drone show, highlighting how it was used as a powerful marketing tool.
3.4.8. The video must be recorded in high-quality and uploaded to a file hosting service. A link to the video must be provided along with the submission.
3.4.9. Entries will be judged based on the effectiveness of the marketing message, the creativity in promoting the brand or product, and social media viral impact.
3.4.10. Participants must submit an application with a description of the marketing objectives, target audience, and marketing results of the campaign.
3.4.11. A completed form describing the video material and its marketing context is required for consideration.
3.4.12. The winner in this category will be recognized for their innovative use of the drone shows as a powerful marketing tool, effectively engaging the audience and enhancing brand awareness.

This category recognizes the drone show that raises awareness of social problems or significant causes. The nominees will demonstrate performances creatively addressing social issues, promoting empathy, understanding, and action among the audience. 

Rules:
3.5.1. This category aims to recognize drone shows that have made a meaningful impact by raising awareness of social problems or important causes. Examples include drone shows that have effectively fundraised for charitable organizations, brought awareness for environmental issues, highlighted human rights issues, and shed light on various social issues.
3.5.2. Participants may submit one application per nomination. Each participant has the right to receive an award (1st to 3rd place) in only one nomination. Misclassified applications may be transferred to a different nomination by organizers. Two criteria apply to all participants: meeting the requirements and submitting before the deadline.
3.5.3. Participants will showcase drone show performances that creatively address social issues, promoting empathy, understanding, and inspiring action among the audience. Examples may include choreography that symbolizes unity and diversity, or visual storytelling that emphasizes the importance of compassion and social responsibility.
3.5.4. The drone shows should effectively convey messages related to social issues, encouraging positive change and support for those in need. This could include raising awareness about humanitarian efforts, the environment, public health, and more.
3.5.5. Nominees are encouraged to use choreography, visual storytelling, and compelling visuals to deliver powerful messages that resonate emotionally with the audience. For instance, drones forming heart shapes to symbolize love for a cause or displaying images that represent overcoming adversity.
3.5.6. Videos of drone shows presented at events or initiatives dedicated to social problems or charitable causes are eligible for submission. Examples may include drone shows held in conjunction with fundraising events, community gatherings, or awareness campaigns.
3.5.7. Participants must submit a video recording of the drone show, showcasing how it raises awareness of the social problem. This video can highlight how drones have been used creatively to address the issue and engage the audience.
3.5.8. The video must be recorded in high-quality and uploaded to a file hosting service. A link to the video must be provided along with the submission.
3.5.9. Application will be evaluated based on the effectiveness in addressing the social problem, the emotional impact on the audience, and the relevance of the message. Jury will evaluate how well the drone show managed to convey its intended message and inspiring action.
3.5.10. Participants must submit their application before the specified deadline along with a description of the social problem addressed, the impact of the performance, and any associated charity or awareness initiatives.
3.5.11. A completed form describing the video material and its meaningful impact on society is required for consideration.
3.5.12. The winner in this category will be recognized for using drone shows as a powerful tool for advocating social causes, inspiring positive change, and fostering awareness. The examples set by these drone shows will encourage others to contribute to societal well-being through innovative and impactful performances.

This prize is given to drone shows that demonstrate exceptional creativity and accuracy despite having a smaller fleet of drones. It recognizes the ability to maximize the impact of a limited number of drones to deliver an impressive performance.
3.6.1. This special award is given to drone shows that showcase exceptional creativity and accuracy despite using a smaller fleet of drones, specifically less than 100 drones.
3.6.2. All participants must meet the contest requirements and submit their applications before the specified deadline. The winners of the special prizes will be chosen by the jury from among all contest participants who have met these criteria and entered any of the nominated categories or special prizes. Submitting an application exclusively for a special prize is not allowed.
3.6.3. Participants in this category will demonstrate their ability to maximize the impact of a limited number of drones, delivering an impressive and visually captivating performance.
3.6.4. The drone show should exemplify innovative choreography, synchronized movements, and breathtaking visual effects that highlight the potential of drone technology, even with a smaller fleet.
3.6.5. Nominees are encouraged to explore unique patterns, formations and dynamic movements that showcase the beauty of drone synchronization.
3.6.6. Videos of drone shows featuring less than 100 drones are eligible for submission.
3.6.7. Participants must submit a video recording of the drone show, demonstrating the creativity and precision achieved with a smaller fleet of drones.
3.6.8. The video must be recorded in high-quality and uploaded to a file hosting service. A link to the video must be provided along with the submission.
3.6.9. Entries will be judged based on the creativity and accuracy of the drone show performance, the synchronization of movements, and the overall visual impact.
3.6.10. Participants must submit their application before the specified deadline along with a description of the creative strategies used to optimize the smaller drone fleet's impact.
3.6.11. A completed form describing the video material and its innovative use of a smaller drone fleet is required for consideration.
3.6.12. The winner of this special prize will be recognized for their ability to push the boundaries of drone show performances, delivering an extraordinary show with a smaller fleet of drones.

This award recognizes exceptional drone shows born from teamwork among drone show providers. It recognizes participants who collaboratively create and present captivating drone performances. By facilitating such collaboration, this nomination promotes unity within the Drone Show Community and advances the industry's development.
3.7.1. This special award recognizes drone shows that are the result of a successful collaboration with members of the Drone Show Community.
3.7.2. All participants must meet the contest requirements and submit their applications before the specified deadline. The winners of the special prizes will be chosen by the jury from among all contest participants who have met these criteria and entered any of the nominated categories or special prizes. Submitting an entry exclusively for a special prize is not allowed.
3.7.3. Participants in this category will be recognized for their efforts in involving and engaging community members in the creation and execution of the drone show.
3.7.4. The drone show should exemplify a sense of unity, pride, and camaraderie among the participants and the community that has contributed to its success.
3.7.5. Nominees are encouraged to showcase how the collaboration with industry communities enhanced the creativity, diversity and impact of the drone show.
3.7.6. Videos of drone shows that involve community collaboration and contributions are eligible for submission.
3.7.7. Participants must submit a video recording of the drone show, highlighting the collaborative efforts and the community's involvement.
3.7.8. Participants must submit a video recording of the drone show, highlighting how it was used as a powerful marketing tool.
3.7.9. The video must be recorded in high-quality and uploaded to a file hosting service. A link to the video must be provided along with the submission.
3.7.10. Submissions will be evaluated based on the level of community engagement, the inclusivity of the collaboration, and the overall impact of the drone show on the community.
3.7.11. Participants must submit an application before the specified deadline along with a description of the community collaboration process and the positive impact on the drone show.
3.7.12. A completed form describing the video material and the community collaboration aspect is required for consideration.
3.7.13. The winner of this special prize will be recognized for fostering a sense of unity and collaboration within the drone show industry, showcasing the power of working together.

This award is given to start-up businesses or individuals who are new to the drone show industry (launched business in 2022). It aims to encourage and recognize their talent, creativity, and potential, providing a platform to showcase their skills and gain industry recognition.
3.8.1. This special prize is dedicated to emerging businesses or individuals who are newcomers to the drone show industry, having started their business in 2022.
3.8.2. All participants must meet the contest requirements and submit their applications before the specified deadline. The winners of the special prizes will be chosen by the jury from among all contest participants who have met these criteria and entered any of the nominated categories or special prizes. Submitting an application exclusively for a special prize is not allowed.
3.8.3. Participants in this category will have the opportunity to showcase their talent, creativity, and potential as rising stars in the industry.
3.8.4. The drone show should demonstrate innovation, technical expertise and the ability to captivate audiences, reflecting the rising star's unique approach to drone show performances.
3.8.5. Nominees are encouraged to use the platform to gain industry recognition and exposure for their emerging business.
3.8.6. Videos of drone shows from rising stars (new businesses established in 2022) are eligible for submission.
3.8.7. Participants must submit a video recording of the drone show, highlighting their distinctive approach and the creativity that sets them apart.
3.8.8. Participants must submit a video recording of the drone show, highlighting how it was used as a powerful marketing tool.
3.8.9. The video must be recorded in high-quality and uploaded to a file hosting service. A link to the video must be provided along with the submission.
3.8.10. Entries will be judged based on the level of creativity, technical skill, and the potential to make a mark in the drone show industry.
3.8.11. Participants must submit their application before the specified deadline along with a description of their business's journey, aspirations, and vision for the future.
3.8.12. A completed form describing the video material and the business's potential as a rising star in the industry is required for consideration.
3.8.13. The winner of this special prize will be recognized as a promising talent in the drone show industry, providing them with a platform to showcase their skills and gain valuable industry recognition.

4.1.1  All winners will receive the following prizes:

  • LEGO Flying Drone Kit: building set that combines fun and technology, allowing you to create your own flying masterpiece.
  • Certificate: In recognition of their outstanding achievement, each winner will receive an official certificate acknowledging their excellence in the competition.
  • Statuette: Winners will be presented with a beautifully crafted statuette, a symbol of their accomplishment in the 4th International Drone Show Competition.

4.1.2. Prize in Partner Nomination: Drone Show Animation 300 Drones

The main prize for this nomination is an exclusive ticket to SIGGRAPH Asia 2024, an internationally renowned event that will take place from 3 – 6 December 2024 in Tokyo, Japan. SIGGRAPH Asia attracts the most respected technical and creative individuals from all over the world who are passionate about research, science, art, animation, gaming, interactivity, education, and emerging technologies.

Please note that this prize includes the ticket to the event itself. However, it's important to clarify that all expenses related to accommodation, flights, and any additional costs associated with attending the event are the responsibility of the participant.

In the event that a participant is unable to attend this prestigious event due to objective reasons or In the event of ticket cancellations or other unforeseen circumstances preventing attendance, the winner may be awarded one of the following alternative prizes:

  • iPhone 15 Pro Max 512 GB
